iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, and Windows PCs, older apps and many upload forms cannot open them. Animated WebPs are saved as a single still frame, and because JPG has no transparency, clear areas are filled with white.

The two JPG tools have a quality slider from 40% to 100%, set to 90% by default, which looks the same as the original for normal photos. Lower values make smaller files for email or for web forms with a size limit. PNG output is lossless but larger. Because each image is redrawn and saved as a new file, camera details such as GPS location, camera model and capture time are not copied across, which protects your privacy when you share photos. A converted JPG can sometimes be larger than the WebP it came from.

Common questions about image converters

Should I convert to JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for sharing, email and uploads, as files are much smaller and the quality slider lets you balance size against detail. Choose PNG when you will edit the image repeatedly and want no further compression loss, or when you need a lossless copy for design work.

Are my photos uploaded to convert them?

No. HEIC and WebP files are decoded and converted in your browser, so they never leave your device. That also means conversion speed depends on your phone or computer rather than a server queue, and large batches may take longer on older devices.

Is GPS location removed from converted photos?

Yes. Each image is redrawn and saved as a new file, so EXIF data such as GPS location, camera model and capture time is not carried over. Keep the original HEIC or WebP file if you need that information later.

How do I open HEIC photos on Windows?

Why is my JPG bigger than the WebP it came from?

WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture can need more bytes as a JPG. The image is also re-encoded at the quality you choose. Lower the slider from the 90% default, for example to 75%, to bring the file size down.
