Common questions

Why is council tax different in each area?

Each council sets its own Band D figure to fund local services, and the police, fire service and any parish or town council add their own charges. The other bands are fixed fractions of Band D, so a council with a high Band D is high across every band.

How are council tax bands worked out?

Bands in England and Scotland are based on what a home would have sold for on 1 April 1991, and in Wales on 1 April 2003. You can look up your band on GOV.UK for England and Wales, or through the Scottish Assessors in Scotland.

Does Northern Ireland have council tax?

No. Homes in Northern Ireland pay domestic rates, worked out from the property's capital value at 1 January 2005 multiplied by the regional rate and the district council's rate.
