Common questions
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon charge no state sales tax in 2026. Alaska allows local sales taxes, so some towns there still charge one.
Why does my receipt show a different rate?
Most states let cities, counties and special districts add their own sales tax, so the rate on a receipt is the state rate plus the local rate for that address. The pages here show the state rate exactly and the local rate as a state average.
Do online purchases have sales tax?
Usually yes. Since 2018 sellers over a state's sales threshold must collect tax based on where the order is delivered, so the rate follows the delivery address.
