PNG is lossless, which makes photos and screenshots large. Converting to JPG usually shrinks photos dramatically and is the fix when an upload form only accepts JPG. Add your PNG files and each is encoded with MozJPEG at the quality you choose, 90 by default, which looks the same as the original for photos. JPG cannot store transparency, so you pick the colour that fills transparent areas, white unless you change it, and the tool tells you which files had transparency. For logos and graphics with sharp edges and flat colour, PNG or WebP is usually the better format; try Compress PNG instead. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with a solid colour. White is the default; pick any colour with the background option. Files that had transparency are flagged in the results.

Why is the JPG smaller than the PNG?

PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which is inefficient for photos. JPG discards fine detail the eye rarely notices, so photos are often 5 to 10 times smaller. For flat graphics and text, the difference is smaller and JPG can show fuzzy edges.

What quality should I use?

90 is visually the same as the original for photos. 75 to 85 gives smaller files for email and the web. Screenshots with text look better at 90 or above.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Every image is decoded, processed and saved inside your browser using WebAssembly encoders, so the files never leave your phone or computer. You can switch off your internet connection after the page loads and the tool still works.
