Compress PNG works the way TinyPNG and pngquant do. Most PNG files store millions of possible colours, but logos, icons, screenshots, charts and illustrations use far fewer. The tool picks the best palette of up to 256 colours for each image, maps every pixel to it with gentle dithering so gradients stay smooth, and saves an indexed PNG with OxiPNG, which tries several compression strategies and keeps the smallest. Transparency, including soft edges, is preserved. Fewer colours means a smaller file: drag the slider down for icons and flat graphics, and keep 256 for screenshots and anything with gradients. Tick Lossless only to keep every pixel exactly and just recompress, which typically saves less. A target size option is also available. Photos are usually better as JPG or WebP. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is PNG compression lossless?

PNG itself is lossless, but the big savings come from reducing the number of colours, which is a small, controlled loss. At 256 colours most logos, screenshots and charts look identical. Tick Lossless only if you need every pixel kept exactly; the file is still recompressed, but the saving is smaller.

Does it keep transparent backgrounds?

Yes. The palette includes transparent and semi-transparent colours, so cut-outs, soft shadows and anti-aliased edges keep their see-through areas. If you save as JPG instead, transparency is lost, because JPG cannot store it.

Why is my photo PNG still large?

Photos have smooth tones in millions of colours, which PNG stores inefficiently even after reduction. Below about 128 colours you may see banding. For photos, choose JPG or WebP in Compress Image, which usually gives a far smaller file at the same visual quality.

How many colours should I use?

256 for screenshots, charts and anything with gradients. 64 to 128 for logos and illustrations with a few flat colours. 16 to 32 for simple icons. Use the before and after slider to check edges and gradients at full size.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Every image is decoded, processed and saved inside your browser using WebAssembly encoders, so the files never leave your phone or computer. You can switch off your internet connection after the page loads and the tool still works.
