Everyday money calculators handle the sums behind spending, saving, borrowing and household bills, and they show the working so you can check it. They range from quick percentage and tip sums to mortgages, pensions and child maintenance, with UK, US and Canadian rules where the countries differ.

For quick sums, the Percentage Calculator covers a percentage of a number, percentage change and discounts. Common questions about everyday money & saving

How do I work out a percentage of an amount?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the amount. 20% of 150 is 30, and 15% off £60 is a £9 saving, leaving £51. The Percentage Calculator does this for you and shows the formula with your own numbers, along with percentage change and discount modes.

How much will my savings grow with compound interest?

How much stamp duty will I pay on a £400,000 house?

In England or Northern Ireland a home mover pays £10,000: nothing on the first £125,000, 2% on the next £125,000 and 5% on the last £150,000. A first-time buyer pays £5,000. In Scotland LBTT is £13,350 and in Wales LTT is £10,500. The Stamp Duty Calculator covers second homes too.

Should I pay off the highest interest debt first?

Paying the highest rate first, the avalanche method, costs the least interest. With $5,000 at 20% and $2,000 at 10% and $300 a month, it takes 29 months and $1,511.13 of interest, against 30 months and $1,789.68 for the snowball method. Snowball clears its first debt sooner, which some people find easier to stick with.

How much is a £200,000 mortgage a month?

A £200,000 repayment mortgage at 5% over 25 years costs £1,169.18 a month in the UK, with about £150,754 of interest over the term. The same loan in dollars costs $1,169.18 in the US and $1,163.21 in Canada, where half-yearly compounding makes it slightly cheaper.
