Enter the bill total, choose a tip and say how many people are paying. The calculator works out the tip as a percentage of the whole bill, adds it on and divides the total equally. You see four figures: what each person pays, each person's share of the tip, the total tip and the final bill. Tip buttons cover 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 18% and 20%. The UK setting starts at 12.5% and the US setting at 18%. Amounts are shown to the penny or cent, so you may want to round up when paying in cash. The split is always even, so it does not handle people paying only for what they ordered.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A £120 bill with a 12.5% tip is £120 + £15 = £135, so four people pay £33.75 each, which includes £3.75 of tip each.

How do I calculate an 18% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.18. On an $80 bill an 18% tip is $14.40, making $94.40 in total. Split between two people, each pays $47.20. Pick 18% in the calculator and set the number of diners to 2 to check it.

Is the tip worked out before or after splitting?

The tip is worked out on the whole bill first, then everything is divided equally. A 15% tip on a £90 bill is £13.50, the total is £103.50 and three people pay £34.50 each. Each person's tip share is £4.50, the same as 15% of their third.

Can I enter a custom tip percentage?

Yes. Pick 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 18% or 20%, or type any other rate in the Other box. Tick "Round the total up" to round the bill to a whole amount before it is split. The UK setting starts at 12.5% and the US setting at 18%.

Can I split the bill unevenly?

No, the calculator splits the total equally between everyone. If people ordered very different amounts, add up each person's items, then use the percentage calculator to add the same tip rate to each share. For most group meals an even split is quicker.
