List each assignment or category, such as homework, quizzes, a midterm and a project, with its grade and its weight in the course. Grades can be a percentage, points earned out of points possible, or a letter. The calculator multiplies each grade by its weight and adds them up, so homework at 92% worth 20%, quizzes at 68 out of 80 worth 30%, a 78% midterm worth 25% and a B project worth 25% come to 84.65%, a B. If your weights do not add up to 100, it scales them in proportion and tells you, which gives your grade so far on marked work. The letter grade uses the common US 10-point scale by default, or a university scale or your own cut-offs.

How to use the Weighted Grade Calculator

  1. Add a row for each assignment or grade category and enter its weight as a percentage of the course.
  2. Enter each grade as a percentage, as points earned out of points possible, or as a letter, which counts as the middle of its band on the chosen scale.
  3. The calculator multiplies each grade by its weight, adds the results and divides by the total weight, so weights that do not add up to 100 are scaled in proportion.
  4. Your weighted grade is shown with its letter grade on the scale you choose, with a table of how much each item adds to the total.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight. Homework at 92% worth 20%, quizzes at 85% worth 30%, a midterm at 78% worth 25% and a project at 85% worth 25% give 18.4 + 25.5 + 19.5 + 21.25 = 84.65%.

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

Divide by the weights you have instead of by 100. With 88% on work worth 15% and 74% on work worth 25%, the total weight is 40, so the grade so far is (88 × 15 + 74 × 25) ÷ 40 = 79.25%. The calculator scales the weights for you and says so.

How do I turn points into a percentage for a weighted grade?

Divide the points you earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. Scoring 68 out of 80 on your quizzes is 68 ÷ 80 × 100 = 85%. Choose Points on a row and the calculator converts it before applying the weight.

What letter grade is 84.65%?

On the common US 10-point scale, where a B starts at 80% and an A at 90%, 84.65% is a B. On the University of Toronto scale it is an A- because A- starts at 80% and A at 85%. Your own school sets its cut-offs, so check your syllabus.

How are letter grades counted in a weighted average?

Each letter is counted as the middle of its band on the scale you choose. On the common US 10-point scale an A counts as 95%, a B as 85%, a C as 75%, a D as 65% and an F as 30%. If your teacher uses other values, enter the percentage instead.
