Paste or type a list of numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines, and the calculator gives the mean, median, mode or modes, range, count, sum, smallest and largest value. Tick the box to add weights, such as course credits or the share each test counts towards a grade, and it works out the weighted average too. Every step is shown: the sum and division for the mean, the sorted list and middle values for the median, and how often the mode appears. Values are handled as exact fractions, so 0.1 + 0.2 gives exactly 0.3 and long lists do not drift. Use a full stop for decimals, as a comma always starts a new value. Up to 10,000 values are accepted.

How to use the Average Calculator
- Paste or type your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
- The mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are, and the median is the middle value once they are sorted.
- The mode is the value that appears most often, and the range is the largest value minus the smallest.
- If you add one weight per value, the weighted average is the sum of each value times its weight, divided by the sum of the weights.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the average of a set of numbers?
Add the numbers up and divide by how many there are. For 2, 4, 4, 5, 7 and 9 the sum is 31 and there are 6 values, so the mean is 31 ÷ 6 = 5.17 to two decimal places. This kind of average is called the mean.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the total divided by the count, the median is the middle value in order, and the mode is the most common value. For 6, 3, 9, 6, 2 and 8 the mean is 34 ÷ 6 = 5.67, the median is 6 (halfway between 6 and 6) and the mode is 6.
How do you find the median of an even number of values?
Sort the values and take the two in the middle, then find the number halfway between them. For 2, 4, 4, 5, 7 and 9 the middle pair is 4 and 5, so the median is (4 + 5) ÷ 2 = 4.5. With an odd count, the median is simply the middle value.
How do you work out a weighted average?
Multiply each value by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total of the weights. Marks of 85, 72 and 90 worth 20%, 30% and 50% give (85 × 20 + 72 × 30 + 90 × 50) ÷ 100 = 8,360 ÷ 100 = 83.6.
What if no number appears more than once?
Then the list has no mode, and the calculator says so. If two or more values tie for most frequent, they are all modes: 1, 1, 2, 2, 3 has two modes, 1 and 2. The mean, median and range still work as normal for any list.
