Enter your current grade, how much the final exam is worth and the overall grade you are aiming for, and the calculator shows the score you need on the final. With a current grade of 78% and a final worth 25%, you need 86% on the exam to finish on 80%. It also works the other way: type a final score to see where your overall grade lands. If the target needs more than 100%, it says so plainly and shows the best grade you can still reach. A table lists the score needed for each letter grade on the common US 10-point scale, the University of Toronto or York University scale, or cut-offs you enter yourself. It assumes your school does not round or curve.

How to use the Final Grade Calculator

  1. Enter your current grade in the course as a percentage and how much of the overall grade the final exam is worth.
  2. Add the overall grade you want, and the calculator works out the final exam score that gets you there.
  3. It uses the formula needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, and flags any result above 100% as out of reach without extra credit.
  4. Type a final exam score in the second box to see the overall grade and letter grade it would give you on the scale you pick.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need on my final to get an 80?

It depends on your current grade and the exam weight. With 78% now and a final worth 25% of the course, you need 86% on the final: 78 × 0.75 = 58.5, and (80 − 58.5) ÷ 0.25 = 86. The calculator does this for any numbers you enter.

How do you calculate your final grade with a final exam?

Multiply your current grade by the share of the course that is not the final, then add your exam score multiplied by the exam weight. With 78% going in, a final worth 25% and a score of 70%, your overall grade is 78 × 0.75 + 70 × 0.25 = 76%.

What if I need more than 100% on my final?

Then the target is out of reach on a normal exam. With 85% now and a final worth 20%, reaching 90% would need 110% on the final. The best you can finish on is 88%, which is what the calculator shows. Extra credit or a curve are the only ways past that, so ask your teacher.

Can I fail my final and still pass the class?

Often, yes, if your grade going in is strong and the final is not worth too much. With 92% now and a final worth 30%, scoring 0% still leaves you on 64.4%, a D on the common 60% cut-off. Check your syllabus, as some courses require you to pass the exam itself.

Does this final grade calculator work for Canadian universities?

Yes, the maths is the same. With 72% now and a final worth 40%, you need 79.5% on the exam to finish on 75%. Scoring 65% instead gives 69.2%, a C+ on the University of Toronto scale. You can also enter your own school’s letter cut-offs.
