Load a PDF and any bookmarks it already has appear in a list you can rename, re-point to another page, reorder with arrows or delete. Add bookmarks one at a time, create one per page, or click Generate from headings, which reads the text and picks out headings by their size. Heading detection needs real text, so scanned PDFs should go through PDF OCR first. Bookmarks can be top-level or nested one level under the entry above, giving a chapter and section structure; deeper outlines are saved at two levels. Each bookmark opens its page fitted to the window, titles in any language are supported, and the file is set to open with the bookmarks panel showing. Everything happens in your browser.

How to use the Bookmark PDF

  1. Drop your PDF into the box and any existing bookmarks are loaded into the list.
  2. Click Add bookmark, One bookmark per page or Generate from headings to build the list.
  3. Edit each title and target page, use the arrows to reorder and the indent button to nest entries.
  4. Click Save bookmarks and download the PDF, which opens with the bookmarks panel showing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add bookmarks to a PDF?

Load the PDF, click Add bookmark, type a title and the page number it should open, and repeat for each chapter. Click Save bookmarks and the downloaded file shows them in the sidebar of Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and most readers.

Can bookmarks be created automatically?

Yes. Generate from headings reads the PDF's text and turns larger-font lines into bookmarks for you to review. It needs selectable text, so run PDF OCR on scans first. One bookmark per page is the fallback for plain documents.

Can I edit or delete bookmarks a PDF already has?

Yes. Existing bookmarks load automatically so you can rename them, change their target page, reorder or delete them. Remove all clears the list, and saving then produces a PDF with no bookmarks.

How many levels of bookmarks can I create?

Two: top-level entries and one level nested beneath them, such as chapters and sections. If the PDF already has a deeper outline, the lower levels are placed at the second level when you save.

Will bookmarks show on my phone?

They are saved as a standard PDF outline, which most mobile PDF apps display in a contents or bookmarks menu. Some basic built-in viewers do not show outlines, so test in the app your readers will use.
