Pick a state, enter a price and see the state tax, the local tax, the total and the effective rate. The state rate is the statutory rate as of 1 July 2026 for all 50 states and DC, including the five with no sales tax. Where cities and counties add their own tax, the local box is prefilled with the state's population-weighted average, which you can replace with the rate for your address. Switch to reverse mode to take the tax out of a receipt total and find the price before tax. A quantity box handles multiple items, and two tables show what the same purchase costs in the five highest and five lowest rate states. Each tax is rounded to the cent, the way a till does it.

Frequently asked questions
How much is sales tax on $100 in New Jersey?
$6.63, so you pay $106.63. New Jersey charges 6.625% and has no local sales taxes, so the rate is the same everywhere in the state. Most clothing, footwear and grocery food are exempt, and shops in Salem County charge half the regular rate on most in-store goods.
What is the sales tax in Missouri on a $100 purchase?
About $8.45, giving a total of $108.45. Missouri's state rate is 4.225%, which is $4.23, and the average local rate is 4.22%, another $4.22. Local rates in Missouri go up to 6.25%, so the exact figure depends on the city and county where you buy.
How do I calculate Ohio sales tax?
Multiply the price by 5.75% for the state tax, then add your county rate. On $100 that is $5.75 state tax plus about $1.55 at the 1.545% average local rate, so $107.30 in total. Ohio counties and transit authorities can add up to 3%, so the combined rate never exceeds 8.75%.
How do I find the price before sales tax?
Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. A $106.63 receipt in New Jersey is $106.63 divided by 1.06625, which is $100 before tax. Switch this calculator to reverse mode, enter the receipt total and it does the division for you, then checks that the rounded taxes add back to your total.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, so $100 stays $100 in Oregon. Alaska is the exception: it lets cities and boroughs charge local sales tax, averaging about 1.82%. At the other end, Louisiana's combined average is 10.13%, so $100 becomes $110.13.
