Choose a province or territory and enter a price to see the GST or HST, any provincial sales tax and the total you pay. Switch to reverse mode to take the tax out of a receipt total and find the price before tax. Each tax is worked out on the pre-tax price and rounded to the cent, the way a till does it, and Quebec's QST is charged at 9.975% on the price before GST. The full rate table sits underneath: 13% HST in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia, 15% in the other Atlantic provinces, and 5% GST plus PST, RST or QST elsewhere. Rates come from the CRA and provincial governments.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate HST in Ontario?

Multiply the price before tax by 13%. On a $100 item the HST is $13, so you pay $113. To find the total in one step, multiply the price by 1.13. HST replaces both GST and PST in Ontario, so there is no separate provincial sales tax to add.

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. In Ontario, $50 ÷ 1.13 gives a pre-tax price of $44.25 and $5.75 of HST. In Quebec, $50 ÷ 1.14975 gives $43.49, with $2.17 of GST and $4.34 of QST. Rounding each tax to the cent can shift the result by a cent.

What is the sales tax rate in each province?

Alberta and the three territories charge 5% GST only. Ontario has 13% HST, Nova Scotia 14% and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15%. British Columbia and Manitoba add 7% PST or RST to the GST, Saskatchewan 6% PST and Quebec 9.975% QST, a combined 14.975%.

How is QST calculated in Quebec?

QST is 9.975% of the price before GST, and GST is 5% of the same price, so the two taxes do not compound. On a $100 purchase you pay $5 GST and $9.98 QST, a total of $114.98. Revenu Québec says half a cent or more rounds up to the next cent.

What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?

GST is the 5% federal sales tax charged across Canada. HST is a single tax that combines GST with the provincial part in Ontario and the four Atlantic provinces. PST is a separate provincial tax charged alongside GST in British Columbia, Manitoba, where it is called RST, and Saskatchewan, and QST plays that role in Quebec.
