Load a PDF to see its current document properties in editable fields: title, author, subject, keywords, creator application, producer, creation date, modification date and language code (such as en-GB). Change any value, or clear a field to remove it. Custom properties added by other software are kept and listed. Many PDFs also hold an older XMP copy of the metadata that some readers show in preference to the main properties; tick the option to remove it so every reader displays your new values. The title is what browsers show in the tab and what some search engines use as a heading for the file, so a clear title helps. Editing happens in your browser and the file is not uploaded.

How to use the Edit PDF Metadata

  1. Drop your PDF into the box and its current properties fill the form.
  2. Edit the title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, dates or language code.
  3. Clear any field you want removed, and tick the XMP option if it appears.
  4. Click Save metadata and download the updated PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the title of a PDF?

Load the PDF, type the new title into the Title field and click Save metadata. The title is stored inside the file, so it shows in browser tabs and document properties wherever the PDF is opened.

Why does my PDF still show the old title?

Some files keep a second copy of the metadata in XMP format, and certain readers show that copy first. Tick the option to remove the outdated XMP copy before saving so every reader shows your new values.

Can I change the creation date of a PDF?

Yes. Both the created and modified dates can be set to any date and time with the date pickers. Clear a date field to remove that date from the file altogether.

Does PDF metadata help with search engines?

It can. Google may use a PDF's title property as the heading in results when the file itself has no clear title, and a good title makes tabs and downloads easier to recognise.
