Enter your hourly rate, or a yearly salary and the hours it covers, then the hours you worked each day or as a weekly total. Pick US federal overtime after 40 hours a week, California daily overtime and double time, Ontario overtime after 44 hours, or your own UK contract threshold and rate. The calculator splits your hours into regular, time and a half and double time and shows gross pay, your effective hourly rate and a day-by-day table. It then shows what the overtime adds to your take-home pay over a year after Income Tax and National Insurance in the UK, or federal, state and payroll taxes in the US, with an estimate of the US no tax on overtime deduction.

How to use the Overtime Calculator

- Add the hours you worked on each day of the workweek, or one weekly total if your rules only count hours by the week.
- Choose US federal, California, Ontario, UK contract or custom rules, and the overtime multiplier where the rules let you pick one.
- The calculator shows gross pay by rate, then runs your yearly pay with and without the overtime through our UK or US tax engine to show what you keep.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate time and a half?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5 and pay each overtime hour at that rate. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30. Under the US federal rule, 50 hours in a week pays 40 hours at $20 plus 10 hours at $30, which is $1,100 gross, or $22 an hour on average.
How much of my overtime do I keep after tax in the UK?
A basic rate taxpayer keeps 72p of each overtime pound: 20% Income Tax and 8% National Insurance come off. At £15 an hour with 7.5 hours a week at time and a half, £168.75 a week of overtime adds £8,775 over a year and £6,318 to take-home, or £121.50 a week. A Plan 2 loan takes 9% more.
Is overtime tax free in the US now?
Partly, from 2025 to 2028. You can deduct the FLSA premium, the half in time and a half, up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 filing jointly), reduced above $150,000 of modified AGI. At $20 an hour and 50 hours a week, that is $5,200, saving about $624 of federal tax at 12%. You claim it on your return, not through payroll.
Does double time or California daily overtime count for the no tax on overtime deduction?
Only the premium federal law requires counts. The IRS says just the half of time and a half for hours over 40 in a week qualifies, so double time at $20 an hour still counts $10 an hour. California daily overtime inside a 40-hour week does not count, and Social Security and Medicare still apply.
Do you have to be paid for overtime in the UK?
No. GOV.UK says employers do not have to pay for overtime, and your contract sets any rate. Your average pay for all hours must not fall below the National Minimum Wage. A £25,000 salary for 37.5 hours, with 50 hours worked unpaid, averages £9.62 an hour, below the £12.71 rate for those aged 21 and over.
