Enter what you sold something for, what you paid and your fees to see the UK Capital Gains Tax on the gain. The calculator uses 2026/27 rules from GOV.UK: the £3,000 tax-free allowance, 18% on gains that fit in your unused basic rate band and 24% above it, Business Asset Disposal Relief at 18% up to the £1 million lifetime limit, and losses from earlier years. It works out your Personal Allowance and basic rate band from your income, gives the deadline to report and pay, including 60 days after completion for UK property, and shows ways to pay less. Scottish taxpayers use the same UK band. For a sale taxed in the United States, use our US capital gains tax calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How much Capital Gains Tax will I pay in the UK?
It depends on the size of the gain and your income. Sell shares for £40,000 that cost £20,000 plus £500 fees on a £45,000 income: the gain is £19,500, £16,500 is taxable after the £3,000 allowance, £5,270 is taxed at 18% and £11,230 at 24%, so the tax is £3,643.80.
What is the Capital Gains Tax allowance for 2026/27?
The UK tax-free allowance is £3,000 for 2026/27, the same as 2025/26, or £1,500 for most trusts. Gains above it are taxed at 18% within your unused basic rate band and 24% above it. A higher rate taxpayer with a £19,500 gain pays 24% on £16,500, which is £3,960.
Do I pay Capital Gains Tax on selling my house?
Not usually on your main home, thanks to Private Residence Relief, if it was your only home the whole time and not let out. A second home or buy-to-let is taxed: a £90,000 gain on a £45,000 income costs £20,563.80, and you must report and pay within 60 days of completion.
How is crypto taxed in the UK?
Crypto is liable to Capital Gains Tax when you sell it, swap it for another token, spend it or give it away. The cost comes from a pool of all tokens of the same type. A £10,000 gain on a £35,000 income is £7,000 taxable after the allowance, all at 18%, so the tax is £1,260.
What is the Business Asset Disposal Relief rate for 2026/27?
Business Asset Disposal Relief is 18% for disposals from 6 April 2026, up from 14% in 2025/26, on up to £1 million of gains in your lifetime. Selling a qualifying business for £500,000 that cost £100,000 on a £45,000 income leaves £397,000 taxable after the allowance, and the tax is £71,460.
