1. Complain to the firm first
Complain to the firm or adviser in writing, say it is a formal complaint and ask for a final response. 2. How long to wait
The firm has up to 8 weeks to send a final response. You can escalate sooner if it sends one earlier.
3. Escalate to Financial Ombudsman Service
Within 6 months of the date on the final response. It is free. It can: compensation worked out by a set method; interest on the loss; awards up to £455,000 for complaints referred on or after 1 April 2026 about acts on or after 1 April 2019. financial-ombudsman.org.uk/consumers/how-to-complain
4. Escalate to Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)
Only if the firm has gone out of business. It is free. fscs.org.uk
Who does not handle your complaint
The FCA does not resolve individual complaints. The Financial Ombudsman Service does, and the FSCS pays out if the firm has failed.
Where to escalate and the time limits
Time limits run from the date shown in each row. Keep the final response or deadlock letter, because the ombudsman will ask for it.

- Deadlock letter (A deadlock letter is a company's written final answer to your complaint, which lets you go straight to the ombudsman instead of waiting the usual 8 weeks.)

Common questions
How long does a financial adviser have to respond to a complaint?
Up to 8 weeks. If you complained on 1 September 2026 and have no final response, you can go to the Financial Ombudsman from 27 October 2026. If the firm sends a final response sooner, you can escalate once you have it.
What if my financial adviser has gone out of business?
Claim from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). It deals with firms that have failed, while the Financial Ombudsman deals with firms still trading. Both are free, and complaint files at the Ombudsman can move across to the FSCS.
How long do I have to complain to the Ombudsman about investment advice?
6 months from the date on the firm's final response. A final response dated 15 September 2026 gives you until 15 March 2027. The Ombudsman can accept a late complaint only in limited cases, so refer it in time.
How much compensation can I get for bad investment advice?
The Financial Ombudsman can award up to £455,000 for complaints referred on or after 1 April 2026 about advice given on or after 1 April 2019. It often sets a method for working out the loss and adds interest.
What evidence do I need to complain about financial advice?
The suitability report or advice letter, the fact-find and risk questionnaire you completed, statements showing values and charges, emails and meeting notes, and the final response. Work out your loss if you can and say how you calculated it.
