1. Complain to the bank or lender first
Complain to the bank or lender by its complaints form, secure message, phone or letter. Say it is a formal complaint and ask for a final response. 2. How long to wait
The firm has up to 8 weeks for most complaints. For fraud, scams and payment services (transfers, direct debits, e-money) it has only 15 days. You can escalate sooner if you get a final response.
3. Escalate to Financial Ombudsman Service
Within 6 months of the date on the final response. It is free. Common questions
How long does a bank have to respond to a complaint?
Up to 8 weeks for most complaints, and 15 days for complaints about fraud, scams and payment services such as transfers and direct debits. If you complained on 1 September 2026 about a charge, you can go to the Financial Ombudsman from 27 October 2026.
How long do I have to go to the Financial Ombudsman?
6 months from the date on the final response. A final response dated 15 September 2026 gives you until 15 March 2027. One dated 31 August 2026 runs to 28 February 2027, because the month has no 31st.
How much can the Financial Ombudsman award?
Up to £455,000 for complaints referred on or after 1 April 2026 about things that happened on or after 1 April 2019. It can order a set amount, costs, interest at Bank of England base rate plus 1 percentage point, and changes such as correcting your credit file.
Does the FCA deal with complaints about banks?
No. The FCA regulates banks but does not resolve individual complaints. It says to complain to the firm first and then to the Financial Ombudsman Service. If the firm has gone out of business, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme handles claims instead.
Can I claim from my credit card company instead?
Yes, if you bought goods or services on a credit card. Section 75 makes the card company jointly liable for a single item over £100 and up to £30,000. Put the claim in writing to the card company; if it refuses, that refusal can also go to the Financial Ombudsman.
